AEye Lab

The Autonomous AI Ophthalmology Lab at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center

Overview
The Autonomous AI Ophthalmology Lab at Hillel Yaffe Medical Center (HYMC) aims to redefine ophthalmic care by fully integrating artificial intelligence into clinical workflows. This joint initiative combines HYMC’s clinical expertise with the Technion’s excellence in machine learning.

Vision & Mission
The AEye lab is committed to exploring and advancing the frontier of AI in ophthalmology. Its mission is to develop and integrate autonomous automated systems that interact with the patient, diagnose, and plan patient treatment, ultimately improving care quality, access, and efficiency.

Strategic Goals

  • Create a Fully Automated Patient Care Center powered by AI, including:

    • AI-driven patient interaction and data collection

    • Automated ophthalmic examinations

    • Real-time diagnostic reporting

    • Personalized treatment recommendations

  • Serve as a hub for innovation, leveraging AI to enhance diagnostic precision and assist therapeutic decisions in ophthalmology.

SleepAI

AIMLab Spin-out

SleepAI is revolutionizing sleep apnea diagnosis with AI-powered solutions that leverages data from any oximetry device.

SleepAI addresses a significant global health issue: over 1 billion adults suffer from sleep apnea, yet 80% remain undiagnosed due to the limitations of current diagnostic methods. By providing an accurate, accessible, and user-friendly solution, SleepAI aims to improve early detection and management of sleep disorders, thereby enhancing overall public health.

SleepAI is a software platform that utilizes data from common oximetry-based devices—such as pulse oximeters and photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors—to detect and monitor obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with high accuracy. Unlike traditional polysomnography, which requires overnight stays in specialized sleep labs, SleepAI enables multi-night, home-based monitoring using wearable devices. This approach makes sleep diagnostics more accessible, cost-effective, and scalable.

The Spin-out is hosted at the eHV incubator in Modiin Ilit and directed by CEO and cofounder Shirel Attia, a graduate from the AIMLab.

The Technion-Rambam Initiative in Medical AI, “TERA” was launched in March 2022 as a joint-initiative between The Technion and Rambam Health Care Campus – combining clinical expertise, basic science, and engineering in fighting human disease using large medical datasets and state-of-the-art advances in AI.

The mission of TERA is to initiate, support and promote academic research and educational activities between the two institutions and partners in the field of medical AI.
